Have you seen the new feature on Instagram? It’s called Instagram Reels.
You may have heard people comparing Reels to TikTok because they are in fact quite similar. Want to know more? Never fear, we’re here to give you the DL on what Reels are and how you can utilise them in your digital marketing strategy!
Instagram Reels are a new way to create and share content with others on Instagram.
Individuals and brands are able to piece together 15-second video clips with audio, text, special effects, and stickers. Reels can then be shared to either Stories or the Explore page and Feed. There’s also a shiny new Reels tab on a user’s or brand’s profile making it easy to see all Reels in one spot.
Now you know what Reels is, it’s time to talk about why they’re beneficial and how you can use them for business. Here at Melbourne Social Co, we always encourage our clients to seize opportunities when it comes to new features on social media platforms. Reels is no exception!
Reels sit on the Explore page, a place that over 50% of Instagram users use every month. If your reel is shown on this page, there’s a huge opportunity for brand exposure! Here are some ways to use Reels in your digital marketing strategy:
- Share behind-the-scenes content like a day in the life of your team or a brief brand story overview
- Showcase products
- Share educational content like tutorials and tips and tricks
There’s a number of brands already using Reels reely well (pardon the pun). Here’s a few:
Taste – Everyone loves a recipe video so it’s no surprise that audiences are getting on board recipes on Reels too. Check out the Taste team’s Flake Slice here. Yummo!
Spell– A fun try-on haul is always a winner on Instagram. Have a look at Spell’s creative way of showcasing some of their clothing range here.
Tarte Cosmetics– Audiences eat up makeup tutorials so it’s not hard to see why they’re enjoying the bite-sized makeup content on Reels. Here is a tutorial from Tarte Cosmetics.
Brit & Co– Much like makeup tutorials, audiences love a DIY project! Check out Brit & Co’s simple chain hack here.
Update: On the 24th of September, Instagram announced the following changes to Reels:
🤳You can now create a reel up to 30 seconds
⏰ Extend the timer to 10 seconds when recording
