Creative is the new targeting: why your Meta ads live or die on the content
If your Meta ads have stopped working, the fix probably isn't in the audience settings. It's in the ads themselves.
Meta's AI now decides who sees what, where and for how much. The one thing it can't decide for you is whether your content is any good. That's why we tell every brand we work with the same thing: creative is now the biggest lever you have in paid social.
What changed in Meta advertising?
Meta has handed most campaign decisions (audience, placement, budget and how creative is delivered) to its own AI, under the Advantage+ banner. A few milestones tell the story:
- January 2025: Meta removed detailed targeting exclusions, saying performance was 22% better without them (PPC Land).
- May 2025: separate shopping and app campaign types were folded into one Advantage+ structure.
- February 2026: that unified structure became mandatory for campaigns built through Meta's API.
Today, most audience inputs are treated as suggestions. Location and minimum age are the main hard limits left. The old playbook of stacking interests and excluding audiences is largely gone.
Why does creative matter more than targeting now?
Because Meta uses your creative to find your audience. Every ad sends signals about who it's for: the hook, the person on screen, the problem it solves, the format. The algorithm reads those signals and goes looking for people who respond.
The practical upshot is simple. A narrow creative library gets you a narrow audience. Ten genuinely different ads give the system ten different doors into ten different groups of people. Ten versions of the same ad in different colours give it one.
What makes an ad perform on Meta?
The ads that perform stop the scroll, look like they belong in the feed, and make one clear point. In practice that means:
- A hook in the first second or two. Movement, a face, a question, a bold claim.
- Made for the phone. Vertical, captioned for sound-off viewing, native rather than polished-to-death.
- Real people. Creators, customers and team members talking like humans, not a voiceover reading a brochure.
- One idea per ad. If you need three messages, make three ads.
- Genuine variety. Different angles, audiences, formats and offers, not minor tweaks.
How many ad creatives should I be testing?
Enough genuinely different concepts that the algorithm has real choices, plus a steady flow of new ones as the old ones tire. We plan paid content concept by concept, on rolling deadlines, so there's always fresh creative ready before performance drops off. A fixed number matters less than the rhythm.
Should I use Meta's AI-generated creative?
Use it for variations, not for ideas. Meta's Advantage+ creative tools can resize, animate and remix your assets, which saves time. But automated tweaks can also produce off-brand results, so review those settings regularly and switch off anything you haven't approved.
There's a bigger issue too. When every brand feeds the same AI the same kind of assets, everything starts to look the same. Critics have a name for it: "average-vertising" (PPC Land). The automation rewards distinctive work, and distinctive work still comes from people with a point of view.
What does this mean for how I brief an agency?
Spend less time tweaking media settings and more time and budget on making content. Three shifts we recommend:
- Brief creative and paid together. The people making the ads should see the performance data every week.
- Budget for production as an ongoing cost, not a once-a-year shoot.
- Judge creative by results, not by how it looks in a deck.
This is how we've built Melbourne Social Co: strategy, content production and paid social under one roof, so what we learn from the numbers goes straight back into the next shoot.

FAQs
Does targeting still matter on Meta? Less than it used to. Location and minimum age still act as hard limits, but most other audience settings are now treated as suggestions that Meta's AI can expand beyond.
What is Advantage+ creative? Advantage+ creative is a set of Meta settings that automatically adapts your ad assets, for example by adjusting formats, adding music or animation, or testing variations. It can save time but should be reviewed for brand fit.
Why have my Meta ads stopped working? The most common causes are creative fatigue, too little variety in your ads, and weak opening seconds. Poor conversion tracking can also starve the algorithm of the signals it needs.
Can smaller brands compete with big budgets on Meta? Yes. Because the algorithm rewards content people engage with, a smaller brand with sharper, more native creative can outperform a bigger brand running generic ads.
Will AI Replace Social Media Managers?
By now, you’ve no doubt heard of Chat GPT. It’s the AI app that everyone is talking about.
Of course, we’ve been curious, so we thought we’d check it out. We jumped on and asked the AI to write us a blog post on whether or not it’s about to replace us (real life creatives) as Social Media Managers.
Here’s what Chat GPT gave us.
Sure, here's a sample blog post on the topic:
"Will AI Replace Social Media Managers?
As artificial intelligence continues to make advancements in various industries, it's natural to wonder whether AI will replace social media managers. In this blog post, we'll explore the role of AI in the field of social media management and whether it's likely to replace human social media managers.
- Automating routine tasks - AI can automate routine tasks such as scheduling posts, generating reports, and analysing data, freeing up social media managers to focus on more strategic and creative work.
- Improved efficiency and accuracy - AI algorithms can analyse data and make predictions about the best times to post and the types of content that are most likely to perform well. This can lead to improved efficiency and accuracy, as well as insights into how to optimise social media campaigns.
- Limited creative abilities - While AI can automate routine tasks and provide valuable insights, it still lacks the creative abilities and human intuition that social media managers bring to the table. Social media is about connecting with people and creating a sense of community, which requires empathy, emotional intelligence, and the ability to understand the nuances of human behaviour.
- The importance of human interaction - Despite the advancements in technology, there is still a strong demand for human interaction on social media. People want to connect with brands and other users in a personal and meaningful way, and social media managers play a crucial role in facilitating these interactions.
In conclusion, while AI can automate routine tasks and provide valuable insights, it is unlikely to replace human social media managers. The importance of human interaction, creativity, and emotional intelligence in social media management make it unlikely that AI will fully replace human social media managers in the near future. However, it's important for social media managers to stay up-to-date with AI developments and to understand how they can work with AI to optimise their efforts and achieve better results."
So there you have it, the AI is telling us that it’s not here to (totally) replace us any time soon. Or is that what it wants us to think… Only time will tell!
