Instagram Aesthetics - The Importance of a Cohesive Theme

Instagram Aesthetics - The Importance of a Cohesive Theme

If you’re an Instagram addict like all of us at Melbourne Social Co., you may have noticed that many of the app’s most popular accounts have more in common with each other than just a high follower count.

Successful Instagram feeds are, above all, aesthetically pleasing, but in a cohesive way that accurately reflects the aesthetics, vision and message of the person or brand.

One of the main ways to achieve such a visually consistent and impactful feed is by implementing an Instagram ‘theme’. What this means is that there is a visual common thread between all of your posts, so that when someone views your feed it will look cohesive and organised. All your posts will in some way look like they go together.

But what's the right approach for your brand? We discuss a few different ways to implement an Instagram theme below.

Pick a colour

There’s an infinite number of themes to choose from for your feed, but you’ll want to pick one that suits your content and aesthetic. For example, you could have a colour coordinated theme, where a certain colour (or colours) appear in every post. These colours should reflect your aesthetic, and perhaps the design of your brand’s product or logo. The repeating colours will help make your feed look visually stimulating and organised, as well as creating an association between you/your brand and those specific colours.

A common subject

Alternatively, your theme may govern the content of the images you post. For example, your theme could be based around a specific object that appears in every post, such as coffee, plants, water or food; whatever you like! This type of theme tends to be best suited to Instagram accounts that function to promote a specific type of product.

Post & repeat

Another popular theme that guides the content you post creates a repeating pattern of two or three different types of images. For example, this could be set out with two photos of people or scenery for every text post. The text post is usually positioned in between the two photos so that when the feed is viewed as a whole the text posts create a line down the middle. This theme allows for some diversity of content, while also maintaining an organised and symmetrical look to your feed.

A theme for your Instagram page is important for more reasons than just creating a uniform feed and guiding the content you post. Remember that the follow button is located at the top of your main feed, so people are viewing your account and most recent posts as one entity that represents your brand as a whole when they are deciding whether or not to follow you. For that reason, you want to put your best foot forward with the type of cohesive, visually pleasing and professional feed that a theme can help you achieve.

Improve your engagement

One of the other key reasons an Instagram theme is so important is because it can help improve engagement and your connection with your audience. A consistent theme will help your posts stand out to your followers in their feeds littered with hundreds of other accounts’ posts. The element of repetition in your theme will also mean your audience will know what to expect from your posts, allowing them to easily understand the messages you are trying to communicate relating to your brand.

Because Instagram is one of the most powerful platforms available to you to promote yourself and your brand, it is important that your feed reflects who you are and effectively communicates the messages you are trying to get across to your audience. A theme allows you to achieve this in the most aesthetically pleasing way possible, while still appearing professional and creating interesting content for your audience. So, if you haven’t started planning a gorgeous new theme for your feed already – what are you waiting for?!

Why Instagram Stories are a must for business in 2018

Why Instagram Stories are a must for business in 2018

Instagram Stories are a feature that Instagram introduced last year to fight off competition from Snapchat. The feature allows users to post photos and videos that vanish after 24 hours (unless you add them as a highlight on your profile, which stay there indefinitely). Instagram Stories are proving to be very effective in getting brand engagement for those who have embraced them already. So, what are you waiting for? Get insta story creating!

Fun facts:

  • 250 million people use Instagram Stories daily
  • Users spend 28 minutes more on Instagram now thanks to Stories
  • 33% of the most popular stories are from businesses
  • 20% of stories posted by businesses result in a direct message

Here are some ways to best utilise Instagram Stories for your business:

  1. A look behind the scenes

As a general rule, consumers love friendly, relatable brands. Stories is informal in nature, so use this to build a rapport with your followers. Show them the process of setting up a photoshoot, the planning that goes into an event or a product launch for instance.

  1. Gift unique offers

Try running ‘stories only’ competitions and putting discount codes up on Instagram Stories to build brand loyalty and reward those that check out all of your content. We all love a discount code or giveaway!

  1. Embrace geotagging and hashtags

Posts that feature one or more hashtags receive over 12% more engagement than those without and posts with a geotagged location get a whopping 79% more engagement. Another great benefit of adding tags to your posts is that you’ll get improved visibility as your post will be included in the Story ring for that area and hashtag. So, add in that hashtag and geotag location stat!

  1. Create polls

Adding a ‘poll’ sticker is a fabulous way to gather opinions from your followers and also get more engagement. The poll sticker allows you to ask your followers a question and customize the answers. E.g. What’s your favourite colour? Red or Green. Polls allow the audience to feel involved with the business and decision making. You get answers and they feel involved…win win!

Social media can be a confusing aspect of business for many people and that’s totally okay! If you think your business would benefit from a little help when it comes to Instagram and your other social channels, shoot us an email - we’d love to chat with you about your strategy!

How to create an engaging Instagram feed

How to create an engaging Instagram feed

Is your brand's Instagram account flatlining? It's no secret that Instagram is one of the hardest platforms to manage and grow at the moment, but there are a few things you can do to get your brand back on track.

Let's get back to basics

Upload an eye-catching profile pic

The profile pic real estate is limited, so use it well! Generally a logo, or an abbreviated version of your logo using block colour works well here

Write a catchy bio

A great Instagram bio should:

  • Explain a bit about you / your brand and what you do
  • Appeal to your target audience
  • Showcase your tone of voice and brand personality to give fans a taste of what to expect

Make sure your contact details are correctly listed

Is your account set to business, and have you linked it with your Facebook page for seamless advertising campaigns?

Now that you've got the basics covered, it's time to develop your Instagram style guide.

Pay attention to your colour palette

Some of the most successful Instagram accounts tend to use a select colour palette for their photos, helping them to create a distinct style.

Keep your fonts consistent

Aspirational/quirky quotes and text overlays are all the rage on Instagram. To create a cohesive aesthetic, make sure you keep your fonts are consistent throughout your feed.

Now that you have your basic design guidelines, you can start creating some content. At this point, we suggest thinking about your feed as a whole, rather than working image by image

First impressions count, and when someone is checking your brand out on Instagram, they’ll most likely look at the first three rows of your grid first. Do your images all work well together? In today’s world, your feed is essentially your business card, so we  suggest taking some time to make sure it’s the right representation of your brand.

Filters

If you’re using a filter, trying picking one, and sticking with it throughout the feed.

Using Apps to plan your content

What can you use?

There are heaps of programs on the market that you can use to schedule and plan your Instagram posts. Just make sure you aren’t using one which navigates around Instagram’s API.

Here’s a few programs you can use to plan your Instagram posts:

Later (previously Latergram)

  • Re-directs posts through their app, at time you’ve scheduled
  • Provides a series of tiered plans to choose from depending on the size of your business, and how many posts you plan to schedule
  • Allows you to edit photos from inside the app
  • Provides a grid view so you can preview your page before you post
  • The media library allows you to store as many photos as you need to help make scheduling even easier

Plann

  • Aimed at creatives, Plann is all about creating an aesthetically pleasing Instagram feed
  • Grid view allows you to add multiple photos at a time and drag and drop them until they’re in the right place
  • Add captions and store hashtags that will be copied to your dashboard when its time to post
  • A push notification will alert you when it’s ready to go

So you've got a beautiful feed, but how can you make it engaging?

Only post high quality photos

It may seem like a no brainer, but as Instagram is such a visual platform, it’s important to make sure your image is high quality, and not blurry.

Post a variety of shots and content types

Variety creates interest, and interest translates to followers, and followers become customers. So before you post two coffee shots in a row, stop and think about how you can mix things up. And – avoid duplicating your content within your feed!

Create space within your feed

Creating space in your grid is important to helping the eye move freely throughout your feed. We’re not talking about old fashioned borders, but rather mixing up busy images with more minimal posts.

Pay attention to your captions!

Captions can sometimes be an afterthought on Instagram, but we’re here to tell you they’re still important! Keep them short, sharp and include your call to action within the first sentence.

Avoid overly promotional content

While you can still use Instagram to promote your brand and products, keep your sales content subtle, avoiding posting plain product shots or logos. Break up your branded content with aspirational imagery.

Mentioning an influencer or brand in your post? Tag them!

By sharing the love and tagging those influencers, you’re starting a conversation, which hopefully will lead to them supporting you right back!

How to use Instagram to build brand awareness

How to use Instagram to build brand awareness

By now, we're sure you know why Instagram is a must-have tool to grow your business.

With over a third of social media users on Instagram, it’s an essential social media platform for not only connecting and engaging with existing consumers, but marketing to new people as well.

However, using Instagram to build brand awareness is so much more than creating an account and posting pretty pictures.

Need help getting started? Try these four tips:

  1. Use Instagram stories:

When Instagram decided to jump on the Snapchat stories trend back in 2016, consumers got excited. Nearly 100 million people use Instagram stories daily, to showcase live updates on their personal lives, share behind the scenes content or promote products and services.

So if you haven’t already started posting stories on our business account– we’re here to tell you to join the trend! Instagram stories are a great way to get your content in front more people, tap into location stories and engage existing followers (especially since the new algorithm is making it harder for your content to be visible in the feed.) The trick? Keep consumers interested by posting useful and engaging content that isn’t too promotional or 'salesy'.

  1. Host a competition:

What better way to increase awareness for your brand than by hosting a competition? Instagram competitions that use a follow and ‘tag a friend’ approach, help to get your business name and account in front of new people who are likely to also be interested in your product or service based on what you’re giving away.

Just ensure you have an engaging graphic, simple entry method and back it up with paid ads. If you're ready to take your Instagram competition to the next level, why not partner with a relevant influencer to cross promote your competition to their followers?

  1. Run paid ads:

Instagram advertising is a great way get your great quality content in front of a highly-targeted audience. You can now run Brand Awareness ads through Facebook’s Ads manager which places your ad in front of people who are the most likely to recall it, and then optimises it accordingly. You don’t have to spend a fortune on these ads, as little as $5 per day can make a world of difference!

  1. Collaborate collaborate collaborate!

Whether you choose gifting campaigns, influencer takeovers or sponsored collaborations, one of the most effective ways of building your brand awareness on Instagram is by tapping into the large followings of Instagram bloggers and celebrities. Just ensure you choose influencers who are suitable for your brand as their followers are likely to pay attention when they post about your business!

  • Test your objects to see if they look good from a top view.
  • Leave a little space between your objects to balance your composition.

Introducing Instagram's New Business Tools

Great news for businesses! Instagram, one of the world's most popular social media platforms, will start to roll out their new business account profiles in the coming months. These new profiles will make it easier for businesses to be contacted, view insights about their content and audience and reach new customers with accessible promotion and advertising tools.

Here at Melbourne Social Co we’ve rounded up some of the biggest changes:

Contact button:

One of the most practical changes of the new business profiles is the addition of a contact button, where consumers can directly call or email a business straight from the app.

This contact functionality also has a map, where consumers can get directions to store or office locations, eliminating the need to leave the app to search for directions. The new contact button will be clearly visible and placed next to the ‘follow’ button at the top of the account page.

Insights:

For the very first time, the new business accounts will give businesses access to vital insights about their followers, including who they are (gender, age, location) popular posts, impressions, reach and even website clicks. These insights are all accessible right from your mobile phone, which makes tracking statistics easy and simple to do.

Promote:

Not only can you view these insights straight from your phone, now you can promote your most popular posts to reach even more people! This is done directly from the app simply by picking a top performing post, choosing a 'call-to-action' button, selecting your audience, budget and duration.

Another great feature of the new Instagram business accounts is that you can also continue to monitor and view the insights of your promotions in an easy and straightforward way. To do this, click on your Instagram post, click the View Insights link and all the stats are ready for you to see and use.

Stories:

New to all Instagram users (not just businesses) is the 'Stories' feature. No need to worry about oversharing, with Instagram Stories, you can share as much as you want throughout the day. Instagram has also introduced new text and drawing tools, so it's time to get creative with your stories.  The photos and videos will disappear after 24 hours and won’t appear on your profile grid or in feed.

How To Take The Perfect 'Foodstagram'

How To Take The Perfect 'Foodstagram'

We’ve all been there before, snapping the latte art on our coffee or delectable breakfast at one of our favourite café hotspots to post on our Instagram account, but how do you get the perfect 'Foodstagram' without embarrassing yourself?

The trick is all about planning ahead, selecting the right lighting and choosing places that have their tables adorned with pretty props to do the hard work for you.

Read more about the top tricks below:

Select the best lighting:

Selecting the best lighting is the number one rule and trust us, it really makes a difference. Natural lighting is your best option, so make sure you choose your table next to a window for a natural light that isn’t too harsh.

Find a table with pretty props:

While gorgeous latte art stands out by itself, surrounding your focal point with pretty props can instantly make your Instagram picture look amazing. Pick a café that has flowers or candles on the table if possible, otherwise simple wooden tables, marble benches or white tablecloths also create a great contrast. If there are none present, a designer bag or pair of sunglasses are always a great addition. When choosing a prop however, make sure your breakfast or coffee is still at the centre of the image or to the left or the right without having any unnecessary props taking over the shot. Centred images are great for beginners, as they always look neat.

Choose the right angle:

Along with choosing great lighting, picking the right angle is essential. While we don’t recommend standing on the chairs, don’t be afraid to stand up to get the best shot, as food and drink looks best when shot above or on the side. Everyone does it!

Do you need someone to take these professional Instagram images without you having to embarrass yourself? Lucky for you, here at Melbourne Social Co we are experts (at both). We have a series of social media and content creation packages available for any business.

Building A Following On Instagram

Building A Following On Instagram

Are you thinking about Instagram Management for your business? If not, you should be - as one of the fastest growing social media platforms in Australia, Instagram could be your next great marketing tool.

By using Instagram, you can showcase your products/services in a visually appealing manner, take followers behind the scenes of your organisation, (making your business more personable) and you can take advantage of the growing number of users looking for great images to like and share.

So now you know why it’s an important platform for business, here are some of our top tips on Instagram Management for your brand:

  • Post good quality images. Instagram is after all, a social media platform for people that love visuals! So to ensure maximum engagement, make sure you're posting high resolution images that are both on-trend and visually appealing.
  • Post often. Building a big following on Instagram is a balancing act: You need to post often enough to keep your followers’ attention but not so often that they feel spammed and block you. 2-3 posts per day is a happy medium that seems to appeal to users. Remember - consistency is key and regularly posting good quality images will go along way to helping you build your profile.
  • Strike a balance between strategic and fun posts. It is also important to strike a good balance between business (strategic) posts, and fun/lifestyle images. Instagram is not about hard selling - you want all sales messages to be subtle and appealing to your followers. Where possible, tell a story with your image and if you are utilising the image strategically to tell users about a service or product, use your caption to talk about your message and direct users to your website (by including a relevant link in your profile and using the #linkinprofile hashtag) for more information.
  • Follow & interact with others. Follow and interact regularly with like-minded brands and influencers within similar industries. This encourages these users to follow back and like/share your images.
  • Get to know Instagram's filters. Instagram offers more than a dozen automatic image filters, but they’re not all created equal.  Choose a filter that not only looks good, but leaves you with a sharp, clear , professional looking image.
  • Experiment With Video Clips. To give it a try, use the movie camera icon within Instagram to record up to 15 seconds of footage and then apply a video-specific filter to improve its look.
  • Now try Stories. Recently, Instagram introduced 'Instagram Stories'  as a way to share all the business moments of your day, not just the ones you want to keep on your profile. Swipe right into the camera to take a photo or video. Create anything you want, from product sneak-peeks to your worst selfies. Unlike your timeline posts, these photos and videos disappear from your feed after 24 hours, so there's less pressure to maintain your aesthetic, allowing you to have a little fun with your content!
  • Introduce Key New Employees. Whenever you hire a key new employee, take a photo of him or her and post it to Instagram.  Doing so helps your followers to build personal relationships with your team, while also filling your feed with content that isn’t directly self-promotional.
  • Use Relevant Hashtags. Hashtags are incredibly important on Instagram.  It’s a good idea to regularly search around for similar content to see which hashtags are likely to lead to the most awareness and engagement. We recommend posting 10-20 good quality hashtags in the first comment on your post - this seems to generate the best results for content.
  • Host Competitions. One of the best ways to quickly build followers is through competitions. Check out Instagram's blog for some examples of successful competitions and for tips on the best ways to run these competitions on Instagram.
